Metaphysical Chemistry

Mind over matter. Mantric fists swinging at a universe bent on our destruction. A last ditch effort to bring order to a universe spun out of control. One of the biggest truths we lie to ourselves about.

Sitting here now when the winds are calm, the fires extinguished and the waters subsided, none of us believe it. I mean put money down on it type of belief.

It’s been staring us in the face since childhood. We believed it then. We invested everything we had to the idea.

This maxim is a lot more peculiar than you think. Sure, you think really really hard at that table. That table just sits there.

I have had this conversation every so often and I generally ask that a person imagine a universe. Huge. Fill it with whatever you want to. Make it as simple or complicated as you want. Most seem a little off-put when you ask them this so they imagine this universe we mutually agree upon. When I ask them to take all life out of that universe, they are sure I’m cracked. It’s when I ask them how important that universe is if no life is there to observe it that the debate starts.

“It’s very important.”

“Ok. Why? Who makes it important.”

“I do”.

“But you’re not in it?”

This question makes for a lively discussion but if you sit down with it long enough, the universe seems very unimportant. As unimportant as the portion of the universe beyond that part of the universe you can imagine exists just beyond our ability to sense the universe . . . and then further beyond that, in the place you cannot even imagine, the part that you don’t imagine or can imagine you can imagine.

All pedantry aside, this brings forth more explorations into how you own the universe you occupy.

How clean is your room where you are now? It’s like that because of you, or someone else, but it’s condition was created, by the only creators we know for sure that are active in this universe.

Ok, that’s easy to see. You can look around now and apply that to every space you see. Apply it to the natural world where nature is the only obvious influence. Deep.

The subject of health is a contentious one, but it applies just like the condition of the room you are sitting in. It gets really interesting here because this is how you take molecules and move them about and turn them into things that chemists cannot. A body. In fact, chemists normally employ lifeforms to make many of the chemicals you make every day.

You’re high tech. Serotonin is my favorite chemical you make. You make many things that make that body of yours. You think happy things you get the happy chemicals. You think bad things you get the bad chemicals. Do this over years and you have your health in a nutshell created. Congrats!

Look over the chemicals (amino acids, neurotransmitters) that you make and how they effect your body and you have an inkling of what you can do, you wonder-of-the-metaphysical-universe you.

It stops there right? Afraid not.

You remember that time, you know that time before when you met that person? Yes, that one. They looked at you “that way” and it changed everything. You know it did. It was so profound you still remember it today in detail. In all likelihood you had the same affect on others in the same way. You even realized you could influence them easily with the slightest look or gesture, the one that effectively changed their chemistry and had them living that high possibly for days.

From a distance, even if you didn’t think about it that way, you changed another’s bodies chemistry, for better or for worse. Perhaps even now I am successful with my words and have affected yours as well.

We have affixed importance to the entire universe and demonstrated how our slightest thoughts or intentions can change someone from even a long distance . . . those people go on to affect others and our efforts touch hundreds if not thousands.

The earth has changed. There’s no way the earth can be affected by our minds, right? We cannot even affect the table in front of us from earlier. Yet in the last few hundred years the face of the earth has dramatically changed. How?

I’ve shown you the mechanism. An idea escapes out into the world and spreads. Songs of change, chants of change, the winds of change start to blow.

The mind. One mind maybe? Many minds somewhere started this game we are all playing. As a society we are well or sick for the exact same reason an individual is. The prevailing thoughts we think.

Yes, the biggest truth we lie to ourselves about. So true but never really understanding why.

The takeaway? Yikes, no one told us why we need to be optimistic. Why we need to speak kinds words or hold doors open for strangers. Sometimes we need help to be good chemists.
